FILM COLLECTION
Gangsters!
Street hustlers, gun slingers, mob bosses, and everything in between… in September, we curated a collection of gangster films from across countries, eras, time periods and classes.
A storied subgenre of the crime film, gangsters have been an obsession of filmmakers and audiences alike from the very beginnings of the medium, with films like Howard Hawks‘s Scarface (1932) and Mervyn LeRoy’s Little Caesar becoming landmark entries in the genre’s pre-Code era. After the introduction of the Hays Code in 1934, gangster films were more difficult to get made, but the genre was revitalized in the late 1960’s when the Hays Code was replaced by the Motion Picture Association of America rating system, which coincided with the dawn of the New Hollywood movement, giving us some of American and world cinema’s most indelible gangster masterpieces.
Our September collection of gangster films celebrates the international appeal of the genre, as well as its varied traditions across countries and filmmaking eras. Dive in!
ARTIST SPOTLIGHT
Barbara Ling
This month, we curated a collection ten films in honor of the late great production designer Barbara Ling, whose body of work is one of the most celebrated of any designer in contemporary Hollywood. An Academy Award winner for her work transforming Los Angeles in the 2019 film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Ling became known for the dazzling cinematic worlds she could create within almost any kind of story, showcasing period authenticity, contemporary realism, and stylized fantasy in equal measure.
Ling began her career in as a set and lighting designer for theater productions, before transitioning to screen work designing the lighting for the 1981 comedy special The Pee-Wee Herman Show. Her understanding of light’s relationship to material production design made her one of Hollywood’s most sought-after designers, and her body of work has profoundly influenced the look of modern movies.
Get inspired from our September curation of Ling’s body of work – from crime dramas Random Hearts (1999) and Falling Down (1993), romance films The Lucky One (2012) and No Reservations (2007), period piece Fried Green Tomatoes (1991) and contemporary comedy With Honors (1994), coming-of-age fantasy films Fallen (2016) and Hearts in Atlantis (2001), and superhero films Batman Forever (1995) and Batman & Robin (1997). Add shots from these films to your decks today!
TELEVISION SERIES
Spider-Noir
In September, we dropped thousands of shots into our library from both the original black and white and true-hue full color versions of Spider-Noir, the hit superhero television series created by Oren Uziel and starring Nicolas Cage. Also starring the likes of Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez and Abraham Popoola, the series follows Ben Reilly (Cage), a down-on-his-luck private investigator whose latest case pulls him back into his former life as the city’s only superhero: The Spider.
In case you missed it , check out our July interview with series cinematographer Darran Tiernan, ISC and colorist Pankaj Bajpai. The duo sat down with Christian Hurley to discuss their collaboration on Spider-Noir, the process of shooting the series in both color and black and white, and the visual inspirations they drew from to bring one of the year’s most anticipated comic book adaptations to life. You can read their conversation in full here.
